Beauty and sadness

I found an article on the daily mail about an American photographer called Curran Hatleberg that capture 'Beauty and Sadness' during his journey through the country that took 5 years. He has produced two series called Dogwood and The Crowded Edge. The images are well known because of the real human emotions showed in them including some intimate moments. He never planned to go anywhere, he just took his car and drove and came up with such a good work. He spent five years going around the country and taking those images. Following are a few of the images out of that series that I have chosen to speak about.

Above is an image of a lady who's eating a sandwich a the way her face is photographed I can tell that she was speaking when the picture has been clicked and she looks really tense. The look on her face, even though I don't know who she is or I don't know what she is talking about, I can still tell that she is upset about something and she is talking about the problem with the person opposite her.

Above is another example of people just casually sitting down outside on the grass having a conversation with each other what people would do at home. No one is posing for the photograph, it is just like no one even knows that there is a camera around. This is what is making the image look more natural and what is catching the actual emotions on peoples' faces.

By looking at this image I think that the two people photographed are in a relationship and they do not really look happy about a certain problem or maybe because of something that they are watching on TV. I am guessing TV because they are both looking in the same direction and both of them are not looking very happy about a certain thing happening around them or in their mind.

Above is a very interesting photograph that is not actually showing a person but it is still showing so much emotion. It shows a tree with an image of a deceased man and I think those are a lot of people that have signed on the board. It is not showing any face expressions but it shows a lot of emotion in  the sense of someone being dead and people thinking about him.

This is again another image that shows emotion. The lady is crying. I obviously do not need anyone to tell me that the lady is sad because I can see that she is crying.

This is an image of a house and looking at it you can tell that the people living in it are not in a very good state. Even though there is not any sad people or anyone crying, just by looking the house it shows a lot about how the family or person is living inside the house.

This picture again shows a lot how the guy in blue might be feeling right now and the guy inside the car. The guy inside the car looks upset about some situation and the one that is outside the car is talking to someone maybe asking for help or talking to someone and asking about some advice.

This is another image that I really liked out of his series. It looks quite emotional because you can see a man that looks very lonely and is holding on the the white wall next to him. Even though there is a sad aspect to the photograph it is still looking quite beautiful because of the orange/blue sky on the background. I really love how the frame has been set up as well, the composition looks really good how the car is only half visible on one side and there is a wall on the other side. Another thing that makes the image look really good is the dark colours everywhere but than the light white wall on the left side of the frame.

I really liked looking at those images because they have thought me a lot about how to add emotion into images. It even showed me that it is never important to use actual humans to be able to show an emotion.
